It’s really important to protect your oral health and maintain good oral hygiene while you have fixed braces fitted. We show you how to use interdental brushes to reach between your brackets and around the wire to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Your fixed braces shouldn’t be painful, but you may feel some pressure or discomfort for a few days after they are first fitted and every time they are adjusted. This is completely normal and a good sign that treatment is working and your teeth are beginning to move. You can manage any mild discomfort with over-the-counter painkillers as advised by your dentist.

The length of your treatment varies depending on your unique case and how far your teeth have to move. Typically, fixed brace treatment takes around 12-24 months, but we will give you a more exact estimate during your consultation.

It is best to avoid particularly hard, crunchy or sticky foods while you are wearing fixed braces as these could cause damage or dislodge a bracket. It is also a good idea to limit sugary foods to protect your oral health.

Retainers are a vital part of any orthodontic treatment. They help your teeth stay in their new straight positions once your fixed braces have been removed. We advise you on how often to wear your retainer to maintain your straight smile.
