Why choose sedation?

If even the thought of dental treatment is too much for you, intravenous sedation is a safe and effective way to relax you and help you undergo vital dental care. It takes effect very quickly, with the level of sedation tailored to your needs so you feel at ease almost instantly.

With IV sedation, you remain awake and able to communicate but are in a drowsy and calm state. You are unlikely to remember much, if any, of the treatment process, and avoid the risks associated with general anaesthetic.

What does dental sedation involve?

If you are interested in having sedation, or we have suggested you may benefit from the treatment, we discuss the procedure with you in as much or as little detail as you are comfortable with. We also assess your overall health, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels, to ensure you are suitable. It may be useful to bring a friend to your consultation.

We administer the sedation via a soft plastic tube inserted into a vein in the back of your hand. The levels are tailored to your individual requirements and monitored closely throughout treatment. The sedation works quickly, so before long you are relaxed and ready for the next stage.

When your treatment is complete, the effects of the sedation will take a while to wear off. You will need to arrange for someone to accompany you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
